Programs of Service

2022 - 2026

Service and sisterhood have been the cornerstone of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® since 1908. With the theme Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood, the 2022-2026 administration seeks to build upon Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s rich legacy of service by galvanizing our sisterhood of more than 120,000 active members to lead on the front lines of change, education, and advocacy.

This administration has six initiatives. Strengthen Our Sisterhood will serve as the administration’s “Foundation Initiative” as we strengthen our bonds to support our service mission.

The remaining five initiatives will serve as the “Program Initiatives” which include:

  • Empower Our Families

  • Build Our Economic Wealth

  • Enhance Our Environment

  • Advocate for Social Justice

  • Uplift Our Local Community

These initiatives are designed to improve the lives of those we serve. We will work collaboratively to maximize our outreach on progressive endeavors and consistently produce leaders who will advance our credo of service.

About Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

International Background

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, had its humble beginnings as the vision of nine college students on the campus of Howard University in 1908. Since then, the sorority has flourished into a globally-impactful organization of nearly 300,000 college-trained members, bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowered by a commitment to servant-leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope.

As Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown, it has maintained its focus in two key arenas: the lifelong personal and professional development of each of its members; and galvanizing its membership into an organization of respected power and influence, consistently at the forefront of effective advocacy and social change that results in equality and equity for all citizens of the world.

To Be Announced

Alpha Kappa Alpha established itself in the South Eastern part of the United States with the chartering of Pi Chapter at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, on April 12, 1921. In 1932, the Southern Region’s name was changed to the South Eastern Region. From its inception, the South Eastern Region was composed of eight states: Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgia, and Florida.

To facilitate the responsibilities of the Regional Director, in 1953, the region was realigned. Kentucky was assigned to the Central Region, Arkansas and parts of Louisiana to the South Central Region, and Georgia and Florida to the South Atlantic Region. Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and parts of Louisiana remained as the new South Eastern Region. In 1962, another re-alignment resulted in the remainder of Louisiana being removed from the South Eastern Region, leaving the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee to operate as the South Eastern Region. This realignment enabled the Regional Director to work more closely with the chapters.

Xi Iota Omega Chapter History

The Xi Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was chartered in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA, on May 22, 1982. The chartering ceremony culminated almost a year's efforts by Oak Ridge members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, to establish a chapter in their own community.

The charter members were Betty Walker, Gwendolyn Sims, Marine Harris, Kathleen Stephens, Lila Smith, Marva Walton, Rose Weaver, Edwena Crowe, Eva Washington, Brenda Coffin, Alma Golden, Earnestine Horton, Delorise Barnes, Ruby Miller, Mary Montford, Cassandra Osborne, Marietta Wright, and Pamela Watkins.

The Chartering ceremony was held on the 10th floor of Oak Ridge's 12-floor skyscraper, Jackson Plaza, on May 22, 1982. The Knoxville graduate chapter, including former International President, Arnetta Wallace, shared in this occasion.

The first candidates for membership into Xi Iota Omega Chapter became Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members on May 21, 1983. These women, "The Sensational Seven," were Kathy Gethers, Ruby Gray (deceased, 2003), Joy Liggett, Maria Ann Miller (deceased, 2014), Yvonne Sanders (deceased, 1999), Patricia Tanner, and Theresa Venable.

Xi Iota Omega Chapter has made a profound impact on the Oak Ridge Community in programs that are both productive and meaningful and whereby the chapter has been honored with a number of regional awards.
